Paula Nunes, Valerio Arcary: Brazil, Bolsonaro, and Covid-19 (video)

Official statistics list more than 12,000 Covid-19 deaths in Brazil. The real number is likely at least twice as high and it is growing at a terrifying rate. Neo-fascist President Jair Bolsonaro is encouraging far-right street protests and pushing to open the economy in the coming weeks. And while the military asserts its power, Brazil’s powerful left-wing parties have agreed on a unified campaign push for Bolsonaro’s ouster, Fora Bolsonaro/Bolsonaro Out!

This videoconference recorded on May 12 features Paula Nunes and Valerio Arcary from the Resistência current in the Party for Socialism and Freedom speaking about the public health and economic crisis, the danger of the far right, and new forms of opposition being developed by trade unions, health workers, feminists, and the black movement. It was hosted by No Borders News and Puntorojo Magazine and is part of a fundraising campaign for Esquerda Online. If you are able, please go to the “Support Brazilian Socialists” button at No Borders News (on the right hand side of the page) and make a $10, $20, or $50 donation by PayPal. If you would prefer another method, please contact editor@nobordersnews.org and we will arrange it.

Paula Nunes is an activist in the black freedom movement in Brazil and a civil rights attorney working with Contactas Direitos Humanos. Valerio Arcary is an author whose books include O Martelo da Historia and As esquinas perigosas da História.
